OWEN WINGRAVE an Opera by Benjamin Britten Libretto by Myfanwy Piper Opera Collective Ireland in association with the Académie de l’Opéra national de Paris and the Irish Chamber Orchestra Stephen Barlowe Conductor Tom Creed Director Aedín Cosgrave Set & Lighting Catherine Fay Costumes Cast Benjamin Russell Owen Wingrave, Christopher Cull Spencer Coyle, Peter O’Reilly Lechmere Roisin Walsh Miss Wingrave, Rachel Croash Mrs. Coyle, Amy Ní Fhearraigh Mrs. Julian, Sarah Richmond Kate Andrew Boushell Sir Philip/Narrator Following its award-winning collaboration with Handel’s AGRIPPINA (“All round perfection that was wondrous” – The Sunday Business Post), the Irish Chamber Orchestra is delighted to once again join forces with Opera Collective Ireland to present the Irish Premiere of Britten’s compelling masterpiece OWEN WINGRAVE in a co-production with the Opéra national de Paris. Composed at the height of the Vietnam war, the subject provided Britten with an ideal opportunity to make a public statement of his deeply held pacifist beliefs. Far from being mere propaganda, OWEN WINGRAVE is a characteristically rich and multi-layered work that is as pertinent now as it was then. As with AGRIPPINA, the cast of which featured Irish singers that have since gone on to sing on some of the most prominent stages of the world including Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, La Scala Milan and the Teatro Real, Madrid, OWEN WINGRAVE will see the finest young Irish singers take centre stage. The superb cast includes the baritone Benjamin Russell who is currently carving a wonderful career in Germany and the accomplished Limerick soprano Roisín Walsh as his formidable aunt.
