First Ever Irish Language Event for Jazz Festival

For the first time in its 31 year history the Cork Jazz Festival will host an Irish language event as part of its festival programme.

The monthly club at The Roundy will treat those interested in improving their Irish to a night of funk, jazz and soul with Crossbones, a scintillating quintet of young professional jazz musicians from Cork.

Well known to Irish language enthusiasts in the city, Club Daon-Phoblacht (Club People's Republic) kick starts the bank holiday weekend festivities on Thursday evening heartily welcoming anyone with an interest in the Irish language regardless of whether they are fluent or just looking to try out the cúpla focal.

Crossbones is made up of two sets of siblings accompanied by piano maestro Phillip Collins, currently lecturing music at WIT. The backbone of the group is drummer Steve Kelly and Deirdre Frost on bass with their respective siblings Eoin Kelly and Paul Frost on trombone and bass trombone respectively.

Also an accomplished guitarist and singer, Paul Frost will sing some well known jazz and funk tunes as gaeilge adding a unique twist to a gig to what is sure to be an action packed start to the jazz weekend.

The club, upstairs at The Roundy, opens at 8.30pm and entry is €5 or €3 for student. For more info see www.peoplesrepublicofcork.com/gaeilge
